Takemusu Aikido Canterbury is offering an 8 week women’s only Aikido Introductory course. We will explore the basics of Aikido in our safe and friendly dojo.

Aikido is a non-competitive Japanese martial art. The techniques of Aikido depend not on physical strength, but on circular motions that blend with the energy of the attacker. There are no physical boundaries such as being tall or short, big or small, young or old , or whether you’re male or female! But this time, the focus of this course is tailored just for women.

During this 8 week period, you will learn how to avoid impact from attacks, falling and rolling safely, and the fundamental techniques of Aikido. You will also notice improved coordination, confidence, flexibility and mental wellbeing.

No previous training required, just bring comfortable clothing (active wear), a bottle of water, motivation and friends!

“Give Aikido a go! You may find someone new in yourself, I look forward to seeing you on the mat” - Eiko Kawaguchi

Your teacher (Sensei) will be Eiko Kawaguchi, Sandan (3rd degree black belt). Eiko is one of our senior students at the dojo and has been doing Aikido for 15 years. Eiko attends many seminars in New Zealand and has travelled back to Japan to train at O’Sensei’s dojo (Ibaraki dojo) in Iwama. Aikido is often referred to as Budo, which means a martial way or path. This is the beginning of a journey, take that first step.

The Dojo is in the ARA Recreation Centre on the corner of Moorhouse Ave and Barbadoes St. Someone will greet you on your first visit to the dojo as entry is by key card. Please be ready 10 minutes before class starts at 7.10pm. We have changing rooms at the dojo. There is ample free parking, in the carpark around the Recreation Centre. We will send out a map to everyone who enrols a week before the course starts.

As the building is key card access only after 5pm we will have someone meet you at the entrance at 6.50PM.
